<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7kl2uzz_c2oDOXXFN79SPFOkfkgYZvgaT61YwWYsM6bOxxJx_s3TrGQ8HgAhLhxKejilO4UJqQvoYcLwNNw5J2LD5ptoBVxrmldkdidDg3P_zg_3vjz6MTiNrwoHT71Dz3n49rKdiPQE/s1600/20190205_185659.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7kl2uzz_c2oDOXXFN79SPFOkfkgYZvgaT61YwWYsM6bOxxJx_s3TrGQ8HgAhLhxKejilO4UJqQvoYcLwNNw5J2LD5ptoBVxrmldkdidDg3P_zg_3vjz6MTiNrwoHT71Dz3n49rKdiPQE/s200/20190205_185659.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yes the month ended with a week in hospital. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It all started going wrong soon after the New Year, I knew things were getting bad, I had started a headache that got progressively worse, I was getting weaker as the month went on, sleep was almost impossible. The last week in January I was due to collect my next dose of Chemo tablets, I couldn't cope with anymore pills so I wanted a break for a shorty while, unfortunately events rather overtook my break. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was very Anemic so on the Wednesday I spent the day in Hospital having a Blood Transfusion, driving home that night I stopped at Morrisons and went to the Loo, the next thing I new I was vomitting up huge clots of blood and by now the headcache was unbearable, as I left I noticed one of the cubicles was occupied, so some poor guy had been trapped in there while my performance went on, so I went home to bed at 6 in the evening. Luckily the next morning after a bit of a surreal night I was woken by my Oncology nurse ringing and as soon as she heard the state I was in she called an Ambulance. It is so difficult on your own as to make the decission to take yourself into Hospital, in hindsight I should have done something much earlier, but I had an appoitment with my Consultant at Clatterbrige coming up where I new I could get to the bottom of the headaches quite quickly, the thought of having to go to my GP and or A&E and then the time everything would take would be to much.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Funny in A&E everyone was concerned about the internal bleeding, which is obvioulsy not good, but it was the pressure in my head that had become unbearable, the pain was unbeliveable and I really was at the point of giving up, vomitting blood folowed by what felt like being hit in the head with a hammer is not something I recommend. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As I had thought a CT scan of the brain showed that my Cancer had spread and the headaches were being caused by the swelling of the Mets in my head, amazingly some Steroids later and things had calmed down, at least now I could be at peace. An Endoscopy followed to see what was going on in my staomach, but I new little about it, the last I remember was the Doctor saying thats 4ml going in, no idea what the drug was but oh boy did it work! I was completely out of it, so much so that sometime later coming round being taken to a Ward, I thought I was being driven somewhere to pick up my car, it was a long time before I grasped where I was and what was going on, Biopsies had been taken from a couple of lumps in my stomach that bled as soon as they were touch.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I spent a couple of nights in a private room which was a godsend, no food or drink for a couple of days made me so thirsty but not particularly hungry, eventually when I was alloweed to have some water I managd to vomit some of it back up with some blood, but that was the Saturday and the last time I brought any blood up, I think I must have brought up around 2 pints of blood in the end and in Hospital I was given 4 pints and thankfully it has settled down.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I spent a week in Hospital and had a CT scan of my chest, abdomen, pelvis etc as well as the earlier head scan so with the Biopsies from my stomach these would show how much the Cancer had sread.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I left Hospital on the Wednesday, I think? To be honest the last couple of weeks have been a blur and I still struggle with what day of the week it is. Several days later I would see my Consultant at Clatterbridge to see what could be done.</div>

Roll on 1st Jan and a chance to start over, this time I will not be starting the year by being ill, a lot I want to do next year places to go people to see, need to crack on with the cycling and get fit again.<br />
Went to York yesterday pre Christmas meet up with some friends from the North East and Scotland, was a great day although bloomin cold. Six of us met, three of us are ill with Cancer related ailments, very sad but one of the Johns who I havent seen for Six months looked very ill, was as fit as a fiddle last time I saw him but it was so noticeable how ill he has become, been there done that when you lnow you really should have stayed home, freezing cold putting on a brave face but would rather just be home in bed, do wish him well as he has a Bone Marrow transplant at the end of January and then spends nearly Six weeks in isolation as the risk of infection is so high.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
The other month I had a day in Newcastle, long overdue. Very lucky with the weather it got better abd better as the day went on. The idea was to photograph Central station then have a walk over the Redheugh bridge along the Tyne to have a look at Dunston Staithes, where coal was loaded onto ships, now the largest wooden structure in Europe, then as the sun was getting a bit lower and the light interesting walk back along the Tyne<i> </i>photographing the bridges<i> a</i>nd walk over the High Level bridge looking at a famous location or two from the film 'Get Carter' then back to Central station, and that is exactly what I did<i>, </i>very jolly it was too.</div>

I have now been able to drop my daily dose of Sutent to 25mg, this is half what I started on, to be honest I have no idea how I coped with 50mg, its been really hard going recently, I don't like to moan because so many people are have a far worse time than I am, but I think it has all gradually built up, apart from maybe the stomach pains, I don;t think there has been any major side effects, its the gradual wearing you down that is the problem, there are so many small problems that added together start to grind you down.<br />
As soon as I new I could drop the dose I felt more positive, I have had a big problem with eatingf the last month or so, I just could not be bothered to cook, so have been eating quite a lot of rubbish, because my taste has been shot apart food all tastes the same, so this past week I have made a conscious effort to eat sensibly and its been ok, I have cooked most evenings and have felt better for it, the next thing I need to sort is exercise, I just have had no energy or inclination, I now have some energy I just have to crack on and do it.<br />
<br />

I don't smoke and I don't drink. The stop smoking was forced on me by Angina but it was something I have wanted to do ever since I started!! Unfortunately because of all the other health problems, I have not gained any benefit from it other than saving money and not having the smell and the mess and of course making my health worse. The drinking I just don't enjoy, like anything else I drink and most foods thanks to the drugs I now take they mostly taste pretty rubbish, the Sutent leaves you with this horrible Metallic taste that effects most things you eat or drink. Talking of Sutent I am now in my sixth month of the drug. I had my first CT scan since I started, a couple of weeks ago, this was all very positive showing a reduction in the various lumps and Tumors I have, to be honest every time I get a report I seem to have extra lumps in different places, Kidney, Lungs, Chest, Face,Neck and now Abdomen, anyway they are all smaller, yes it is great news but I am a little wary as two years ago the Clinical Trial showed a reduction in the first year but after that everything started growing again, but the idea of the Sutent is to give me more time which it is doing.<br />
Ah the side effects! Yes I am very lucky, many people are literally going through Hell I am only on the Stairway to Hell! Unfortunately I thought as my body got used to the Drug the side effects would get less but it seems to be the other way round. It is getting a bit predictable, I am two weeks of taking Sutent daily then I have a week off then two weeks of taking drug etc. Second half of week off not too bad, sleeping ok fair bit of energy but food and drink a bit grim, first week on Sutent much the same second week on Sutent it goes to pot, no sleep, no energy, everything aches, food is rubbish, covered in spots, skin is sore and itchy,spend half the time on the toilet, horrendous stomach pains and nausea to name a few, once I am on the week off this all improves very quickly so in general half the month is ok and the other half a bit rubbish.<br />

Singleton Station last saw regular passengers over 80 years ago after a lifespan of little more than 45 years, it is amazing anything has survived and now recent clearance of the trees has exposed the derelict platforms for the first time in several decades. All to do with an extension of the Centurion Way a cycle/pathway which runs north from Chichester in West Sussex, hopefully the site will not be sanitised to heavily. </div>

Clydach Station on the Heads of the Valleys route between Abergavenny and Brynmawr is up for sale 325K. The fella who lived here did so from when his parents bought the station from British Rail in 1958, one of his brothers who has inherited the station was born here 60 years ago but sadly won't be moving in, so the whole history will end. Apparently a railway enthusiast interested in purchasing the station wanted to move a train of sorts to the site until it was pointed out it would be rather difficult with the local roads the only way would be to relay the track to Aberavenny!</div>

I now there are many cancer drugs with much worse side effects and people are suffering way more than I am but bloomin eck! The first two weeks were fine then almost over night everything started to go wrong, sores over my face, horrendous burning in my mouth when I try to eat anything, permanent nausea, awful stomach cramps, complete lack of energy to name a few, I even get out of breath just climbing the stairs!<br />
I saw my consultant yesterday, and have now dropped the dose from 50mg to 37mg and have gone from 4 weeks on 2 weeks off to 2 weeks on 1 week off, and this is now my week off yipee!! I also came home with a bag of lotions and potions and creams and pills to help with the side effects, hopefully the change in the Sutent dose will make a difference, as I really couldn't have gone on like that, it was starting to make me think is it worth it. My Heart seems to be holding up after the operation so that is good news, I have a Pet scan in Manchester next month just to check over the Heart to make sure there are no left over problems, sadly with all the other problems I have I am not able to take advantage of the healthier condition of my Heart and to be honest at times I don't feel any better than before the operation, but the reality is that without the operation if the Angina hadn't killed me the stress and strain from the side effects of Sutent would have finished my Heart off.<br />
<br />
Despite all the problems I have been out a little and went up to North Yorkshire when we had the second lot of snow and very wild it was too. In some ways it was just as well I was feeling so ill and didn't go out as it would not have been wise for me to be out in that cold.<br />

I did have a day out on the North Wales Coast, mainly to photograph the remaining railway Signal Boxes before they were taken out of commission and as it was such a nice day I had a look at the ship 'Duke of Lancaster' which is moored at Mostyn, originally a railway ferry used on various routes to Ireland, after she was laid up she was bought to Mostyn to become a local attraction but years of legal wrangling and disputes has left her with an uncertain future.</div>

Finish painting the fence some brown on the small fence in the front garden then its get the soil dug and all the debris removed put some plants in, bit of pruning in the front garden next month when the worst of the cold weather has gone, small bit of decking in the back garden when I have a mind for it and that will just leave painting the garage door, amazingly apart from what I decide to do in the loft that will be the whole house and garden finished. Woo hoo!</div>

Courtesy of https://www.jonathanschofieldtours.com/ I spent a very enjoyable couple of hours walking around Mayfield station, it was nice to do it without all the agro of climbing fences and dodging security. Mayfield is a very popular destination for explorers, unfortunately it is getting harder these days to get into sites as exploration is frowned upon by the powers that be, and often buildings are demolished as soon as they become empty to stop Arson and other stupid acts. Mayfield was going to be demolished a year or two back and sadly most of the Canopies were cut back but it gained a reprieve, the latest developers have plans to incorporate some of the building in a regeneration project with the usual apartments ,shops and green spaces. While this is all very laudable, the site should never have been sold and should have remained in railway ownership, something akin to selling the family silver! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Piccadilly station is hopelessly over crowded, by both trains and passengers, especially the two through lines which form the main Manchester-Liverpool services, if anyone has had the misfortune to travel on the Trans Pennine Express trains they will know exactly what I am talking about, incredible that today's Health & Safety regime means that you can't sneeze without someone ready to take control and whisk you of to hospital yet train operators are allowed to force passengers to use platforms and trains that are dangerously over crowded. This is in 2018, what will happen in 10-20 years time? Mayfield could have been the safe guard for the future, through platforms built to ease the congestion at Piccadilly, dedicated platforms for London trains! Of course this would all have cost a colossal amount of money but so will the proposed development, unfortunatey a railway station would not generate vast wealth for a handful of people. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This country puts profit before anything else and the powers that be are incapable of looking at the bigger picture and to the future, but then politicians and developers are not interested in the future as that will become someone else's problem, funny really as that's exactly the way it was in the 1950s 1960s.......</div>

Nearly a month since I had my Heart operation and the stents inserted in my Artery, a bit grim at the time, I spent a night in Manchester Infirmary, not the nicest of hospitals, way to big and too many people trying to do too many things and then forgetting to do many of them. Of course I managed to pick up the fly bug while I was in there so the next couple of weeks when I should have been recovering I was in a very bad way feeling very rough, the worst part about it was I had no idea if the operation had worked or not, as I was so short of breath presumably from the flu that it was a good couple of weeks before my breathing settled down and it became obvious that the operation had been worth it. I still get a little short of breath but nothing really to worry about and I have had no feeling that I might get an Angina attack, hence why I started cycling again, it will take some while to get reasonably fit as I have no strength in my legs but its a start.<br />
My Kidney functioning has been gradually deteriorating, quite a noticeable difference between November and January, unfortunately the Angiograms and Scans put a lot of pressure on the Kidney as the various contrast agents that are used do not do it any good. I have a CT scan in a couple of weeks time but it will be without contrast agent, it will be the first CT scan since I stopped the treatment back in August and I am not very optimistic about what it will show, the Clinical Trial treatment may have stopped shrinking the Tumours but it had stopped them growing, the lump on my face that I had Radiotherapy for last month has grown quite considerably since August so much so that I am very wary of being seen around people as it really is gross now and I certainly can't go out without trying to cover it up, I am told that thanks to the Radiotherapy it should just drop off, but it is taking its time and its not nice to see it in the mirror each morning, it looks like something out of a horror film, and I have to be very careful now I am on blood thinning meds as once it starts to bleed it wont stop and it gets very messy.<br />

My sister came to stay with me the other week, it was probably the longest we have spent together since we were kids and we had a great time, she has been so good to me since I have been ill and we get on so well and have a lot in common that I think neither of us realised. Her visit was very well timed as I was just starting to feel almost human so we were out most days and the walking and fresh air has done me a power of good. She is very into churches, so we visited a couple local that I have never been in and also managed three Cathedrals in two days. While obviously the buildings themselves are fascinating we also got a very warm welcome, Patsy has a habit of talking to anyone and everyone so we met some lovely people and while I am not particularly religious I do have a very open mind and enjoy talking to new people about their experiences.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have to say I do feel the best I have felt for a year or more so I have many plans for the near future and quite a few expeditions planned, a few days in North Yorkshire this week a couple of trips to Glasgow and some local explores. My camera has been rather underused this past few months.</div>

Six days of Radiotherapy for the cancer on my cheek and a Heart Operation on Thursday in Manchester. The worst part of the Radiotherapy is the two hour round trip in the car, twice I have been on my way home before the time of my appointment. It is a little odd the treatment, i'm sure the equipment cost's thousands but there is no sensation at all, the equipment comes down out of the ceiling and is directed at my cheek then everyone leaves the room for a couple of minutes and then it is done, no sound, no vibration or feeling of any sort! I think the staff are just sitting outside playing cards and it is a big scam haha. Joking aside I hope it does work, as for the last couple of months I have a permanent plaster on my cheek as the lump looks hideous and is growing quite quickly and it is a very odd feeling to look in a mirror and actually see my cancer.<br />
Thursday I am off to Manchester Royal Infirmary for an operation on my heart, along with thousands of others I got a call the other day to cancel it until 15th February but very fortunately when they read up on my circumstances it was reinstated, the thought of having to wait yet another month really knocked me sideways, a horrible position to be in, those poor people who have had their operations cancelled have my heart felt sympathy.<br />
Lots of talk in the press about people at risk in the cold weather and the Flu that seems to be sweeping the country. The cold weather has caused me a lot of problems with my breathing and it is easy to see how things could go very wrong if I was not careful, I have been lucky and avoided the Flu, again I think I would be in a lot of trouble if I caught it, its only over time that you learn how vulnerable you are when you are ill.<br />
This time of year I would normally be very busy with my exploring around the country and with some of the gorgeous frosty days we have had recently I have looked on rather longingly, its not so much that I wouldn't be capable of getting out and walking etc, I would with a bit of care but its more psychological, to properly enjoy something you have to be at peace with yourself and the world around you, something that I am not at the moment, I have a horrible premonition of the future, I am very restless and have this constant need to be doing something, which is great in one respect as I have finished all the DIY jobs around the house that needed doing, but it feels like all I am doing is trying to put off the inevitable.<br />

This is the fabulous cake made for a lovely friend, the dogs are very good likenesses for her three dogs, some people are very talented.<br />
<br />
I had a great time down in Hampshire at Christmas, staying with some lovely friends and visiting Cousins and Aunt and Uncle, really great people, they have been so supportive so it is good to be able to catch up. I do have some great people around me, I am very lucky.<br />
<br />
January 11th I have an operation booked at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, it is another Angiogram and the fitting of at least one Stent. One of my Arteries has started to close up which is what has caused all the troubles these past few moths, I am hoping that after the 11th I will be in a much better position to get out and get some exercise and rebuild my back garden amongst other things.<br />
<br />
I also have to have Radiotherapy for a lump on my cheek, this has gradually got bigger and I have to be very careful about it bleeding as it doesn't stop once it starts. The treatment is meant to be next week, five sessions over consecutive days, the worst part of it is the two hour round trip each day, but it will be rather nice to get rid of the lump as it is starting to look rather hideous now.<br />

I had my appointment with the Cardio specialist last week and as always I went in with one problem and came out with another. It does seem like I have Unstable Angina and I need to have an Angiogram to find out what is causing it, but unfortunately that can compromise the Kidneys and as I found out last week my remaining Kidney has deteriorated significantly over the past few months, even the past week or so. A bit of a shock as I didn't realise the Kidney had quite got to that stage, but I am getting used to shocks.<br />
I have the Angiogram booked for next Thursday so hopefully I will find some answers then in the meantime I have yet more pills to take, these seem to be working ok and so long as I take it very steady the Angina isn't a problem. What is going to happen with the Kidney I really have no idea, I will see my Cancer Consultant in a couple of weeks and maybe he will come up with some miracle cure.<br />
I had such plans for getting myself fit and relatively healthy over the coming months so I would be in a good state to fight my new Cancer treatment next year but that is now on hold, I am getting very frustrated sitting at home I keep thinking to myself I must get out and get some exercise but then I remember that I can't, a steady walk is the limit.<br />
<br />
I saw an elderly couple earlier, he was shuffling along pushing a wheelchair while his wife supported him, he was in very poor shape and she said him walking was the equivalent of her running a marathon, I could well believe it. Little incidents like that bring me back down to earth.<br />
<br />
The Internet is an amazing resource but it has to be treated with respect, I started to enter something into google and it popped up with 'Dying from Kidney Failure' no I wasn't brave enough to click on it!<br />
<br />
All this time to spare has let me catch up on a lot of photo related work on the PC including a lot of old photos of my dads, this is his old garage in Addiscombe.<br />

So now I am having Angina attacks, well I think it is Angina a couple of trips to Hospital in a week should confirm it. Just seems to be no end to the things going wrong, 52 years without even breaking a bone and now almost every week something else goes wrong. <br />Typically my last visit to Clatterbridge and bloods were good, blood pressure was good and ECG was good, two days later and I wake in the night with a horrible pressure from my cheeks down through my chest and both arms, after five minutes it had gone and as I am now so used to pains all the time I didn't think much of it until I was out cycling and it started again within a mile, fortunately it stopped quite soon so taking it a bit easy I finished the ride, out walking with some friends on Monday and all was good until we had to walk back up the hill and I couldn't do it, I really thought I was going to have a Heart Attack, my friend had to go and get his car and come back to pick me up. My Doctors Surgery wanted me to go to A & E but the thought of it put me on the edge of panic, fortunately my GP saw me and has prescribed a spray to ease things until I see a specialist. This has come from nowhere and as I spend half my life walking and cycling it has really hit me hard, even having a shower brings on an attack! Exertion and Anxiety seem to be the main triggers, I know my last scans showing the growth in the Cancer hit me hard but it obviously hit me harder than I realised. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
This I am sure sounds like a real cliche, but I am not scared of dying not now after everything I have been through, a bit sad maybe as there are so many things I want to do. I have been out in Liverpool and Manchester the last couple of days, very scary as I can only walk slowly and crowds are a real problem. It is all the complications that really scares me, what happens if I am unable to get out and about, what if I am confined to bed, what if I collapse in the street and someone steals my camera!! Haha funny how the mind works but that really has been a worry. What has really got to me with this latest problem, is I had my mind set on getting fit and healthy now I have stopped my treatment, then going off to America in the Spring for a big trip and coming back next Summer to face the Cancer, at least fit healthy and with some great memories, but now I don't know.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I should have realised when I woke up this morning with a horrendous stabbing pain below my shoulder blade that today was not going to be a good one. I think I have been expecting bad news from Hospital, Cancer doesn't just go away it can lie dormant and it can be very slow growing but it is always there. My latest CT scan has shown a significant growth in the primary tumor on my Kidney and also several other growths have appeared on it, they were probably always there but now four years later they are showing themselves. Short of saying the Kidney has had it, my Consultant was quite honest, six months or a year and it will have had it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what happens next! I have now come off the Clinical Trial, its been nearly two years so enough is enough, I am quite pleased to be drug free and have a chance to get it out of my system. Around Christmas I will have another Scan and at regular intervals my bloods will be checked to see how the Kidney is functioning. Early next year I will have to make a decision on what other treatment I start, not something I am looking forward to as the side effects are pretty horrendous and its debatable if any of the regular treatments do any good. I think it is a case of waiting to see how long the Kidney lasts and then once it is showing signs of failing removing it and going on Dialysis, this could be sometime later next year, but Kidney Cancer is so unpredictable, so who know's.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The thought of having another Severn hour operation to remove the Kidney and all the complications and pain that will come is something that fills me with dread, and on top of that to then have to go on Dialysis gives me no confidence for the future at all, but what is the alternative? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I feel like I am back to three and half years ago when I left Hospital and there seemed little point in making plans for the future. I am lucky I have survived these past few years pretty well and generally have enjoyed myself, so all I can do is see how I feel when I wake up tomorrow and then just take each day one at a time, right at this moment the pain in my shoulder blades is so bad that I have no reserves of energy to deal with anything else which is maybe just as well.</div>

A 9.5 mile walk exploring the old Great Northern Railway lines in Pudsey and Bradford.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I always do this, set of on the train somewhere to have a bit of an explore then end up walking miles and my feet killing me, I am told to take things easy and I really do intend to but it just never quite works out and oh boy do I suffer for it the next day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The main purpose of this explore was to have a look at Greenside Tunnel in Pudsey, the deep cutting leading to the eastern portal is in the process of being infilled from a neighbouring housing development, fortunately because of the Bats that live in the Tunnel it will not be buried completely, some form of access will be left.</div>

Can you imagine living in this house when steam trains were running! This route is the main Bradford Exchange to Leeds line, it is on a very steep 1:49/50 gradient and less than a mile from the station, so for steam engines and their crews it was very hard work, trains often needing two locos and generally doing not much more than 10 mph as they struggled round the curve, the sound would have built to a crescendo as it blasted off the retaining walls and often if the second engine was on the back it would all go quiet for a few moments before the assisting engine blasted round the curve,i'm sure the whole house must have shook, and trains ran all day everyday, the smoke would have stopped anyone opening windows let alone putting washing out. The loco below is just about to turn left at Mill Lane Junction and pass this house.</div>

Bradford Exchange station is a very bleak place today especially on a wet October afternoon. It is called Interchange now and was moved further down the line from the original site, as happened all over the country the wonderful old station with its huge train sheds was neglected and slowly fell apart so it made it very easy for the city planners to have it demolished and this afterthought of a station built in its place.</div>

I found out later that evening that the photograph above which was taken at 16.10 on 1st October 2017 by pure coincidence was taken 50 years almost to the minute after the last steam train left Bradford Exchange for Leeds, which departed at 16.18 1st October 1967.</div>

As you can see from the above photo I still managed some abandoned buildings, although no disused railway lines, but to be fair Greece is littered with old buildings either half finished or half demolished, they do add to the charm of the place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A bit of a shock adapting to the miserable UK weather and the following day from landing in Manchester I had my treatment at Clatterbridge Hospital, only three holes from needles and one big bruise so it could have been worse. My temperature has been a bit low at 35deg, I blame it on returning from holiday, but I will have to keep an eye on it. I have a lump that appeared on my cheek around the time I started my cancer treatment nearly two years ago, the blooming thing bleeds regularly and when it starts it won't stop ( I have just had to put something on it as I realised I had blood running down my face). My consultant wants it tested to see if it is do with the cancer or the treatment, then I will have to see a plastic surgeon to have it removed. Some days I get really fed up, as each week brings a new problem, but fortunately the bad mood doesn't last and I think what the hell worse things happen at sea, and besides its Autumn and that means all the undergrowth is dying back so the Tunneling season is upon us!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like everywhere Glasgow has changed hugely in recent years, but there are still dark corners to find if you look hard enough. My previous visits over the past forty years were confined to driving through or on the train and walking from Central to Queen St, although I did once stay at Central Hotel, I don't think I would be able to afford it today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have created some pages on my website with maps and photos etc of my walks around the city, I think I manged twenty six tunnels, and with a few exceptions I got to both portals, some tunnels have now been long buried and a few have been recently buried under construction works, but some will remain for as long as the city remains as a reminder of another world gone forever.</div>

The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens http://www.htbg.com/ a short way north of Hilo are the nearest I have been to The Garden of Eden, maybe I was lucky to visit early on a Sunday morning when it was very quiet. As you walk down into the gardens the sound of birds and insects is everywhere, each corner you turn there is something special to see, as you get deeper into the gardens you start to become aware of the sound of the Ocean, getting louder and replacing the bird song, until suddenly you are on the cliff side, the water rushing into inlets either side of the garden and the Pacific stretching away into the distance, if ever there was a place to visit for tranquility this is it, highly recommended.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back on Maui we drove up to the summit of Haleakala https://www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm a dormant volcano over 3000m in height, but still over a 1000m short of Mauna Kea on The Big Island.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The views are spectacular, you can clearly see Mauna Kea which was covered in fresh snow when we were there, the clouds move quite quickly, so one minute you can see nothing and then suddenly amazing views like above appear, the park is open 24 hours a day, so it is very popular to go and see the sunrise, that is something I must do! </div>

Flying out of Kapalua, a tiny airstrip in the north of Maui and landing at Kona on the west of The Big Island, I then rented a car and had a road trip to Hilo on the east side, a distance of around 76 miles via the direct route, I choose to follow Highway 19 around the north coast.<br />
One of the big draws for going to the big Island was of course the......actually sorry to admit it wasn't the Volcanoes amazing as they are. The Hawaii Consolidated Railway was based around Hilo and among other routes it built a line up the coast from Hilo to Paauilo around 33 miles and 2 hours by train. The line was constructed just before the First World War, and at the time set a record for the most expensive piece of railway constructed, due to the terrain the line passed through, necessitating many trestle bridges of substantial size and several tunnels amongst other things. When the tragic Tsunami hit Hilo in 1946 almost all of the line was washed away and much of the route was then used to construct Highway 19.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Semi Roundhouse in the photo was the main Locomotive shed for the Hawaii Consolidated Railway, and somehow it has survived, it is in private business use and is built from concrete, as with most concrete buildings of the period it is in a poor way so how much longer it will stay standing I don't know. People are aware of its historical importance and have come up with ideas to re use it, the owner seemed an approachable guy even if he was not impressed when I went inside, as he pointed out there is a lot of concrete that falls from the roof! So who knows what will happen, but I can add it to my list of Loco Sheds I have photographed. Yes I know I am a little strange, as my friends constantly remind me.</div>

Well I survived 4 weeks on a Tropical Island. Temperature was around 26-28 most of the time with an odd day of tropical storm thrown in, not ideal for cycling especially as I am not very fit at the moment, but I managed around a 100 miles in total on my sisters ancient bike. She seems to have a habit of keeping things forever, she has a hockey stick from when she was at school and still reminds me that I pinched her Squash racket! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we were young my sister and I were very close, but over the years we have drifted apart, mainly because of her living in America for over 30 years, but also we are very different people. We did get on very well though, 4 weeks with someone is a long time., but we didn't fall out, we both have a big interest in photography and love dogs, which really helped.</div>

We did go to some amazing places, one way my sister Pauline and myself have loads in common, is she will explore where she lives, walking long distances finding forgotten paths and hidden beaches and fantastic coastline. The above shots were taken on a walk, or should I say scramble over the rocks to the Nakalele Blowhole. There is a relatively easy tourist route from the road, but we went over the cliffs by an anything but easy trail, and boy was it worth it! The site and sound of the Pacific pounding the cliffs was quite incredible, I had to keep reminding myself that we were over 2000 miles from the mainland, the Island of Hawaii are recognized as the most remote on the planet when it comes to distance alone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Maui is really a very beautiful Island and has everything you would expect of a Tropical Island if you look hard enough, unfortunately a lot of it is like an American playground, vast hotel complexes and Golf courses and cars, lots of cars, mind you if you took away all the rental Mustang Convertibles the car population would be halved!</div>

This is the view from Pauline's apartment, during the day even without Binoculars you could watch the Whales breaching. Pauline has two dogs so walking them in the evening as the sun set was a great way to end the day, you could see why the Islands are such a big draw for American vacationing,it is so peaceful and despite the Mustang Convertibles an incredibly friendly and relaxing place to visit, one advantage of the playground aspect in the north of Maui is the complete lack of litter, and the way the area is looked after, it does of course mean that the problems are pushed out of sight, Maui is no different from anywhere else, there are homeless people, true Hawaiians resentful of the American invasion, very little work and as always a big traffic problem.</div>

There is a guy at hospital that I talk to, he is in the same position as me and 12 years younger but he is still suffering, he said he overnight felt like he was an old man, aches and pains, fatigue and general lack of interest or energy for anything, it cheered me up a bit to realise it is not just me and also someone a lot younger.<br />
A week ago I went to stay with some friends on the North York Moors, gorgeous part of the country. My mate had just bought himself a new Mini, so we spent the weekend in it exploring nearby sites, now I really don't do cars anymore, I wasted far to much time and money on cars when I was younger. First thing I did when I got home was take a trip to Warrington Mini and buy one that I had seen on line, and very nice it is too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpqq2iktRt-7EqEI74DMlARJPdsMdBM0qtI88W1cRP_RKB2zS0aNKjdPo3zufb3NYHuBjgFMSKpg5vlwphD3CxAxab5B8syhX3BJMS43zC0iM4eSLR7DH6zIaJ1wAWAQrp1WkfaCQDCv0/s1600/20170127_092953.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpqq2iktRt-7EqEI74DMlARJPdsMdBM0qtI88W1cRP_RKB2zS0aNKjdPo3zufb3NYHuBjgFMSKpg5vlwphD3CxAxab5B8syhX3BJMS43zC0iM4eSLR7DH6zIaJ1wAWAQrp1WkfaCQDCv0/s1600/20170127_092953.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I don't do loads of miles these days and I don't particularly enjoy driving, but the Mini is a very well put together car, very responsive and tight to drive, so I am sure it will get me interested in driving again, despite the fact that I actually detest cars, or is it that I detest what cars have done to people and the countryside!<br />
Despite buying the Mini, the first thing I did the next day was take a train down to Birmingham, doesn't matter how nice a car is, sitting with thousands of others on the M6 and then taking for ever to drive into Birmingham, just to leave the car all day while you go off walking is not my idea of a good time.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yup a walk along an old railway line was the purpose of my trip, this particular line ran from Bescot to Dudley via Wednesbury and Dudley Port, it was closed in the 1990s and technically mothballed, which in this country means abandoned to nature. Part of the route has had some of the undergrowth cut back to allow it to be assessed as a possible extension to the nearby Wolverhampton-Birmingham Tram route, hopefully this will come about, although it will take some years to complete.</div>

As I mentioned at the top of this page I am going away, actually I am going to Hawaii in 4 days time for a month. When I am back in march there will be plenty to write about, so to quote the classic TV series 'The Prisoner' </div>

I used to say to my friend Alan, stop counting back the years to see how long ago certain events were, used to really depress me as there is nothing you can do to change anything, but it is obviously a symptom of getting older as I have to stop myself now. <br />
People often say how brave and strong I am, I really don't feel either, I feel tired, so very tired, how ever hard I try it makes no difference, positive thinking, exercising, eating healthily, 8 hours sleep, none of it makes any difference, I have had enough of constantly hurting and struggling. The other week at Clatterbridge I was chatting to a guy 12 years younger than me on the same treatment, and he said he suddenly feels like an old man, he has a girlfriend 10 years younger, so it makes life very difficult, I don't have a younger girlfriend but life is difficult.<br />
I am off to Hawaii in 4 weeks to stay with my sister, I am trying to word a message to get across to her exactly how I feel both mentally and physically, she can be quite opinionated and has a very annoying habit of assuming everyone thinks the same as she does I don't want her advice and herbal remedies and the Lord will save you ideas, I just want her friendship and companionship, the last thing I want is for us to fall out. Maybe it is me, I find I enjoy my own company more and more, everyone seems so stressed and angry it is easier to get on with yourself, maybe it is an opting out of society, I am lucky I am only responsible to myself, it has been a conscious decision and that is the way I wish it to remain.<br />

Just before Christmas I got to see Rent in London at long last. Truly fabulous show, the St James is quite an intimate theatre, and the show suited it perfectly. Quite a few years ago I was dumped and almost the first thing my ex did was jet off to see Rent on Broadway, I was not amused! The show is loosely based around the opera La bohème, a mixture of joy and sadness not least that its writer Jonathan Larson didn't live to see it open on Broadway. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did nearly spend another Christmas in hospital, I had my treatment on the 23rd and there was a complication and it looked like I was going to be kept in, but fortunately by the end of the day my blood had sorted itself out. The guys and girls at Clatterbridge were fabulous, general hospitals these days are not allowed to get into the spirit due to infection risks etc, but at Clatterbridge it was superb each department had their own theme, and Dorothy even had a little dog to walk around with, made such a difference to what was a pretty awful day.</div>

<em>Lancaster</em></div>
<br />
<br />
I moved to Lancashire permanently a bit over three years ago, technically I live in Cheshire but historically Warrington is in Lancashire, as my old friend Alan would often remind me, can only imagine his reaction when the County boundary changes came about some years ago. <br />
Being born in London and living in the Sussex, Kent and Hampshire, and technically Dorset (more boundary changes) the North West is quite a contrast, both in the landscape and its people. I know there is always something new to see wherever you live, and I do still love walking the streets of London, but moving to the North West has given me so many opportunities to see new sights, and I am only105 minutes from London courtesy of Virgin Trains, also Manchester Airport is only 20 minutes which will be very handy when I fly to Hawaii for a month in February, but that will be a whole new story. <br />

That time of year again, at least I will now be able to catch up with my Blog and website, find it very difficult in the summer if the weather is nice to sit on the PC.<br />
Although the days are short, the winter is the time for exploring, as the undergrowth dies back and the trees lose their leaves, so abandoned tunnels can be got to and seen a lot better, the downside is the mud. By their nature disused tunnels are very damp places, especially in winter.<br />
I have been to Glasgow four times this year, I am on a mission to photograph all the disused railway tunnels in the city, around twenty, and I have probably done half of them.<br />

There are a lot of Kelvins in Glasgow, Kelvinhaugh, Kelvinside, Kelvingrove, Kelvindale to name a few, I am starting to learn my way around the city, having only really passed through in the car a couple of time and on the train a few times. The Kelvin river near Dawsholm, is a fascinating area, with the remains of at least five railway viaducts. <br />

I am now in my tenth month of taking the Immunotherapy Drug MPDL3280A or Atezolizumab as it is now known. Scans so far have been very positive, with a marked reduction in the size of the Tumours, and my consultant has even gone so far as to say that if the Cancer is cleared from my Lungs and Chest they may consider operating to remove the Tumour from my Kidney. This is of course amazing news. Next month will be three years since I was diagnosed, and around eight years since I contracted Cancer, only a year or two earlier and I quite possibly would have died by now, I really am so fortunate with the timing, that there is now treatment for Kidney Cancer that works.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The side effects have taken there toll, I had a break from treatment in August for around six weeks, I was really struggling, the various aches and pains were to numerous to mention and I suddenly felt like I had aged twenty years, and the lack of sleep was driving me mad. After the break it has been better , mainly with the sleep, it is problems with sore feet and ankles that are my main problem, I wish I lived in a Bungalow as walking down the stairs first thing in the morning is very difficult and painful, once out and about its not so bad, and I do try to continue walking a lot, although I suffer for it the next day.</div>

Ok so not quite Virgin Trains, but these are some shots from a ride I had on the Footplate on the East Lancashire Railway the other month, many thanks to the Steve Leyland in the last shot and the rest of the crews.</div>

Talking of Virgin, they are running a summer sale at the moment, so I have booked a few trips, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Birmingham, 4 trips for just over £100, so that will be plenty more photographs of the more seedy side of our Cities, actually the London trip is to go to The Maritime Museum, Imperial War Museum and HMS Belfast, places I have not been to for over 30 years. My Grandad served in the Royal Navy in both World Wars, my Uncle served in the late 1940s early 1950s and my Father was born in Portsmouth, so there has been a lot of Navy tradition in the family and thanks to some Facebook groups my interest has been rekindled. </div>

We live on a very narrow tightrope with our health, something that many try and ignore and others completely disregard until its too late.<br />
I am coming up to my 7 month of treatment, 9 sessions I think. It really has gone very well and I am incredibly lucky, it is obviously working, there is little sign of the Mets in my Lungs or the lump in my chest, and the Tumour on my Kidney is certainly a bit smaller and more importantly the density is changing which indicates the blood supply to it is changing. The side effects have really been very minor, certainly compared to what happens to some poor souls on something like IL2, but I am starting to notice them and they are disrupting my life. Over the first 5 months or so there did seem to be a set pattern, 1st week after treatment, no sleep, 2nd week very disturbed sleep, 3rd week sleep like a baby, but that has all changed. A month ago I was very positive, getting into quite a good routine, eating healthily and plenty of exercise, but the last couple of weeks have knocked me sideways, I am still exercising and eating sensibly, I haven't touched alcohol for over a month, but my sleep is almost non existent. I have tried cycling late in the evening to wear me out, I have tried relaxing and reading before I sleep, I have tried Herbal concoctions and Meditation, nothing has worked, my body feels exhausted but that's it, I can only liken it to standing on a crowded train, where you are desperate to sit down, but know you have two hours of standing. I have been getting bad tremors in my hands and feet, the hands are not a problem, often happens when I am out and about, disconcerting more than anything, but the feet come on with vengeance as soon as I lie down, a bit like Restless Leg, where you have this constant need to keep twitching, making relaxing and sleep impossible. <br />
Until you go lengthy periods without sleep you just don't realise how much it impacts on your life, on the face of it as a side effect it seems very minor, but after a couple of weeks you realise you are only existing, which is no life at all. <br />
